Rootstocks used in the Loire valley

Muscadet area

3309
This is the most widely used stock in this area, whether with Melon or Folle Blanche. It produces quality wines within a good yield level.

SO4
Not largely utilized due to lack of regularity combined with its strength or vigor which can lead to yield excess. However, it is mainly used in vine replacement.

Riparia
Great choice to produce top of the range wine. However, it is rarely used in this area.

Gravesac
Combining moderate strength with regular yields and a good adaptability to moisture, it seems to be a good alternative to 3309.

Anjou - Saumur - Touraine

Fercal & 41B
These are the most tolerant to active calcium carbonate. However, Fercal ripens quicker with better regularity which enables quality wines.

Riparia
The most widely spread in soils with low level of  active carbonate. With Chenin it shows interesting yield levels and produces high quality wines.

3309
Suits red grape well when planted in low level of limestone soils and gives good yield results as well as quality wines.

SO4
Poor performance in calcareous soils with high levels of fertility and vigor it is rarely used except in vine replacement.

Gravesac
Good tolerance to moisture excess in spring it performs well in sandy and sandy-gravelous conditions. Its moderate vigor and regularity give fine wines.

101-14 MGt
Suitable for moist clayey soils its behavior reminds Riparia with Chenin and 3309 with red grape varieties except Grolleau with whom it is not compatible.

5BB & 1103 P
Due to their versatility they are mostly used in replacements.

Sancerre

41B
Emblematic rootstock in the region for 30 years it is now outperformed by SO4 certainly because of its late ripeness with excess in acidity and lack of adaptation to moisture.

SO4
Quite early and tolerant to spring chlorosis it tends to produce excessively; therefore, it is more appropriate to poor soils. Versatile, it is however suitable for any kind of soil.

Fercal
Very high resistance to chlorosis and suitable for cool conditions it is early with a regular and moderate which reveals its qualitative characteristics.

3309
Behaves well in non calcareous and acid soil but its lack of compatibility with some Sauvignon’s clones like The CL 530 encourage the use of 101-14.

Rupestris du Lot
This is the most qualitative rootstock despite its excessive vigor. It helps grape berries to achieve great ripeness giving a nice sugar/acidity balance. However, some fruit abortion problems have been noticed with certain type of grape.
