Rootstocks

The aim of grafting is to protect vine plant from phylloxera and preserving the inherent qualities of the grape variety. Thus, the choice should be made with great care to combine soil adaptability and compatibility with the variety of grape as well as meeting the qualitative and quantitative production targets.

Before starting the selection process, numerous aspects should be reviewed:

  • The type of soil: soil analysis, the level of calcium carbonate, water availability, acidity, soil fertility and root usable depth.
  • Climatic conditions: rainfall, dry periods.
  • The grape variety : incompatibility between graft/rootstock
  • Production objectives:  Yields level and quality.
